Brewer, ME -Searsport, ME 9/9 34.5 miles
The The The UPS came through, albeit a week late and not so much as an, "I'm sorry." We picked Ed's bike up right at nine, wheeled it over to Pat's bike shop where Scott quickly reassembled it. We were on the road before noon and in camp by 3:30 P.M. Today marks the first day of riding. The Searsport Oceanside Campground is very bucolic (But Spendy). Our tent sight is on the bluff overlooking Penobscot Bay. The weather is warm and windy, which is a precursor to a change to cooler temperatures and rain. We took it quite easy today, riding right at ten mph. Ed feels good; so do I. On a philosophical note, as I considered our first world problem of poor UPS customer service, and if it is true that all people are equal in God's eyes, just where does a delayed package rank on the list of God's concerns? Is our problem the same as those of displaced immigrants? Does it rank evenly with a prognosis of certain death? And more, how are we humans to accept whatever comes-big or small? I don't know, but long distance riding gives me plenty of time for pause. Today's highlight was meeting Mabel who gave us fresh baked blueberry muffins for the hefty price of one hug each. She reminded me that joy and fellowship are flip sides of torment and trial. Therefore, life is good, especially today.
